How to Transfer Your Domain to Nairahost

Transferring your domain to Nairahost allows you to manage your hosting and domains in one place, with a single billing system and support team. The transfer process is straightforward, but there are important steps and requirements you must follow to avoid delays or failed transfers.

Before You Start: Transfer Requirements

Most generic domains (.com, .net, .org, etc.) and many country code domains follow similar rules. Before initiating a transfer to Nairahost, make sure:

  • Your domain is at least 60 days old and not within 60 days of a previous transfer.
  • The domain is not locked at the current registrar.
  • You have access to the domain’s administrative email address.
  • You have obtained the EPP/Auth code (also called transfer key) from your current registrar, if required.

Step 1: Unlock Your Domain at the Current Registrar

Log in to your current domain registrar and look for the domain management page. There should be an option to Unlock or Disable transfer lock. Make sure this is turned off; otherwise, the transfer will be rejected.

Step 2: Retrieve Your EPP/Auth Code

The EPP code (also known as an authorization code or transfer key) is a unique password assigned to your domain. You usually find this in the domain’s management settings, or you can request it from support at your current registrar.

Copy this code and keep it safe, as you will need to provide it to Nairahost during the transfer order.

Step 3: Make Sure Your Contact Details Are Up to Date

Many registrars send a transfer confirmation email to the administrative email address on the domain. Check your WHOIS or domain contact details to ensure the email is correct and accessible. Update it if needed before initiating the transfer.

Step 4: Go to Nairahost and Place a Transfer Order

  1. Visit the Nairahost domain section and choose Transfer Domains to Us.
  2. Enter the domain name you want to transfer (for example, yourdomain.com).
  3. Click to check whether it is eligible for transfer.
  4. If eligible, you will be prompted to enter the EPP/Auth code.

At this stage, you will also see the transfer fee. In most cases, the transfer includes a one-year renewal of your domain at Nairahost’s current pricing.

Step 5: Create or Log In to Your Nairahost Account

To complete the order, log in to your existing Nairahost client account or create a new one. This account will be used to manage your domain, billing, and support tickets once the transfer is complete.

Step 6: Configure Nameservers During Transfer (Optional)

During the order, you can set the nameservers you want to use after the transfer. You can either:

  • Use your current hosting provider’s nameservers.
  • Use Nairahost’s default nameservers if you are also hosting with Nairahost.

For Nairahost hosting, choose:

  • cPanel hosting: ns1.nairahost.cloud and ns2.nairahost.cloud
  • DirectAdmin hosting: ns1.nairahost.com.ng and ns2.nairahost.com.ng

Step 7: Complete Payment

Review your order summary, including the domain transfer fee and any additional services. Select your preferred payment method and complete the payment. Once payment is confirmed, Nairahost will submit the transfer request to the domain registry.

Step 8: Approve the Transfer Email (If Required)

Some domain extensions require that you approve the transfer via email. If so:

  • Check the administrative email associated with the domain for a transfer confirmation message.
  • Follow the instructions in the email to approve or confirm the transfer.

If you do not see the email, check your spam or promotions folder. You can also request a re-send from your current registrar.

How Long Does the Transfer Take?

Domain transfers typically take between 1 and 7 days, depending on the extension and the responsiveness of the current registrar. During this time:

  • Your website and email usually continue to function using the old nameservers.
  • You can monitor the status from your Nairahost client area or via email updates.

After the Transfer Completes

Once the transfer is successful:

  • The domain will appear under My Domains in your Nairahost client area.
  • You can manage DNS, nameservers, renewal settings, and WHOIS contact information directly from Nairahost.
  • If you also use Nairahost hosting, you can ensure the domain is properly added to your cPanel or DirectAdmin account.

Common Problems and How to Avoid Them

  • Transfer denied because domain is locked: Make sure the domain is unlocked at your old registrar.
  • Wrong EPP/Auth code: Double-check that you copied the correct code without spaces.
  • No access to admin email: Update the email address at your current registrar before starting the transfer.

Need Assistance?
